Great Light

Mariko Mori’s artistic career, which includes sculptures,  videos, photographs, installations, digital images, and  performances, is original and multifaceted. It features  references to both the pop imagery and religious  traditions of her native Japan, as well as elements of  Western culture, often achieving results with a strong  spiritual imprint that highlights the profound connections  among all human beings. 

From the digital images, photographs and installations  featuring her as a manga heroine, to her more recent,  purpose-driven projects aimed at raising awareness  of environmental issues and equality among peoples,  Mariko Mori’s work blends technology with the  rediscovery of humanity’s ancestral roots.

Peace Crystal

2016-2024, Venice

In 2010, contemporary artist Mariko Mori began a  monumental public project to create six site-specific  artworks in unique ecological settings, local  communities and collaborators on each of the Earth’s  habitable continents. Faou Foundation, a non-profit  organization, was formed to realize the project and  promote environmental awareness of the balance  between humanity and nature. Mori’s artworks are  an emblem of gratitude to the diverse ecosystems  and natural resources found across the globe.  Set within the beauty of their pristine surroundings,  they are a prayer for peace and harmony, and a reminder  that every living being exists to revere Earth’s treasures.  Faou wishes to inquire an ethos of “One with Nature.”  Faou’s third installation and Mori’s newest work,  Peace Crystal, will be on view in the Private Garden,  Palazzo Corner Della Ca’ Granda, Venice from  May - October 2024

Omen

The photographs, paintings, sculptures and installations  of Urs Fischer often radically transform the exhibition  spaces. Revisiting the classical genres of art history, such  as portraits, still lifes, nudes, landscapes, and everyday  objects, Fischer spans styles from Baroque to Pop Art.  He introduces elements of imperfection that create  a paradoxical or transient effect through the use of  ephemeral materials. In some cases, these materials do  not even last the duration of an exhibition, for example,  the large wax sculptures or the bread house. 

For the temporary exhibition, Fischer presents the  environmental installation Omen, featuring 600 drops of  mirrored blown glass made in Murano. Suspended from  the ceiling, these drops cascade down like rain, creating  a kaleidoscopic immersive effect and a sense of osmosis  between the inside and the outside, between the artwork  and the city.

Good Luck Peanuts

Good Luck Peanuts is a permanent work created for the  ceiling of the movie theater at Palazzo Diedo using various  painting techniques, ranging from acrylic paint to enamel  on sand, and from fresco to lime plaster. Playing on the  visual illusion offered by the perception of plasticity, the  marked texture of the brushstrokes on the frame, and  the deep perspective of a clear sky, Fischer, with his  characteristic biting humor, gifts Palazzo Diedo with a  contemporary trompe l’oeil.

Three Little Birds

Ibrahim Mahama produces installations that delve  into themes of globalization, labor, and the movement  of goods, frequently developed in partnership with  Ghanaian communities. The works exhibited at Palazzo  Diedo focus on the themes of railways and trains, with a  particular emphasis on Ghana’s colonial past. 

Three Little Birds is a permanent work created by  Mahama in his community in Ghana at the Red Clay  Foundation, launched in 2019 by a group of artists and  curators to promote local economic, social, and cultural  development, with the goal of making the population  active and economically self-sufficient. The work is  inspired by the visual materials surrounding the artist’s  studio at Red Clay: people interacting with elements of  the railway line create creative platforms, which serve the  artist to investigate the relationship between the body  and history.

The two as-yet unpublished photographic series reflect  again on the value and memory of the railway.  His collaborators sometimes become the subject of his  work themselves, as seen in the photographic series  dedicated to his assistants’ arms, showcasing tattoos  they had inked with their own names and other personal  details due to lack of paper documentation.

Sterling Ruby works with a wide range of media, including  ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, video, and  textiles. His works, in contrast to the minimalist artistic  tradition and influenced by the ubiquity of urban graffiti,  often appear scratched, defaced, camouflaged, dirty, or  splattered.  

LANTERN by Sterling Ruby was expressly conceived  by the artist for the entrance of Palazzo Diedo. It is an  edition of hanging lamps that pays homage to those  that have illuminated the narrow streets and alleys of  Venice since the 12th century. The metal frameworks  were forged using a life-sized maquette constructed  with waste materials from his studio and scrap wood,  

while the panels were made with streaked red glass, in  tribute to another ancient Venetian tradition. While the  original model was hastily put together, the molds are the  result of a meticulous process blending traditional and  contemporary production methods.

The compositions of the tapestries WINDOW of Declinism  1 and WINDOW of Declinism 2 continue the artist’s  exploration of existential questions in relation to the  painterly gesture and conventional ways of seeing, akin to  peering through a metaphorical window. 

Assembled over years of fabric collecting and research  into the history of once widespread crafts, the works  feature Venetian fishing nets, “necklaces” of buoys from  a Burano family, and discarded electronic components,  creating an intricate sky-to-ground crinoline with a  vaguely romantic and nostalgic flavor.
